LIMINAL SPACE: THE TRANSIENT EXPERIENCE OF THE ARCHITECTURALLY OBSOLETE
Project type
Short Film
Date
April 2024
Location
Vancouver, British Columbia
A short film I made for my final thesis project during my Masters of Architecture at the University of British Columbia:
What are the intersections between architectural practice and liminal space, as popularized by The Backrooms and others?
The film sought to raise questions about the relationships that our spaces have with our sense of belonging within the world. Spaces which espouse values of efficiency, modularity, genericness and affordability will inevitably inspire existences molded by those values. Similarly, an existence solely dedicated to the pursuit of these values will undoubtedly shape the world and its spaces as such. It is by the power of our conscientiousness that we are able to break this cycle, and manifest an existence beyond the liminal space, free from incessant becoming and into actual being.
The film makes frequent use of AI as a tool in the design of the generic and the mundane, which is a central theme of the film. Many of the stills are generated via Midjourney, whereas the voice acting was automated by Elevenlabs.io, and Frame interpolation by Runway Labs.
